Moving into a new apartment is both equally exciting and stressful at the same time. Having gone through the thrill of it all myself, I've compiled a list of tips and tricks to help lessen you burden when it comes to furnishing and decorating your new crib.
.) Make a list of apartment essentials first and foremost. Whether you're living by yourself or with roommates, making a list of furniture, appliances, and decorations you want and need before starting the process will relieve stress before it starts. If living with roommates, designate who will bring what, so then everyone contributes, and you don't have to worry about who gets to keep a particular item when it comes time to move out.
.) Take measurements. When it comes to utilizing space most efficiently, measuring the footage available for certain items is key. Before making large purchases, you'll want to know if items will even fit where you intend them to.
.) Check Pitt group pages to buy/sell cheap furniture and decorations. There's are pages all over Facebook to buy/sell furniture in Oakland. A lot of the times students just want things taken off their hands for no cost at all as long as someone is willing to come pick it up from them. A majority of the items are in great condition, and I can vouch for this because my roommates and I bought a coffee table and chairs from these pages ourselves.
.) Command hooks are your best friend. This is as simple as it sounds. They're cheap. They're reliable. I use them for everything.
.) Enlist strong friends to help you move things. Who run the world? Girls. Beyonce said it herself, so it's fact. We can do everything. However, it's also fact that there may be people out there bigger and stronger than you. When moving a large pull out couch up the steep stairs of your apartment on the second floor, it's good to have a few hands on board. For all my fellow Friends fans out there, remember the episode where Ross tries to move his new couch into his apartment? Well, let's just say I wish I had someone yelling at me to pivot when I was moving mine into my house.
