Bobby Berk is my Queer Eye featured guy of the week! I know you all have missed catching up with the fab five, but hopefully by now you have binge-watched the show on Netflix to tide you over. Anyways, Bobby is the expert on décor and interior design for the show. Some of his work can also be viewed on his website.
Bobby is a Houston, Texas native with a particularly touching home life story in how he turned into the wonderful, accomplished, and caring man we all know and love today. After being forced out of his home in his early teens due to horrid homophobia, Bobby is a self made millionaire with a heart of gold. He clawed his way to the top via hard work and dedication despite his struggles to create his own interior design company, Berk Interiors + Design. He has found enough success to make it as a lead consultant in this business for the show, and his tough roots provide an interesting perspective for the show.
Being an adopted gay child in the south surrounded by strict religion could not have been easy, and Bobby is often quoted openly talking about the struggles he faced as such. Through many articles, its pointed out that he started off with $100 and is now worth well over $3 million due to nothing but his own perseverance.
Berk now very openly addresses his sexuality and is part of yet another fab five dream couple with his husband and partner of 12 years, Dewey. I find Bobby’s story extremely compelling in regards to overcoming adversity, especially in a time when someone should not be judged for anything, lest the person they decide to love. Its unbelievable the lengths people have to go to in order to impose their dated and phobia-induced views on others. Bobby’s story gives me hope.
Personally, Bobby’s style is really reflective of my own as well, which may be why I love him so much. He stresses clean lines, organization, and order. This is not to say his style is boring by any means, but just that like me, he too appreciates a little order and balance in a room. In addition to Queer Eye Bobby also makes quite a few other appearances on home improvement type shows, particularly on HGTV. We here at College Eye can not get enough of our Queer Eye guys, and look forward to bringing you our last bio of the week, Kamaro, next week!
