Campus Fitness Involvement: Barbell Club, Powerlifting Team, and more!

The freshman 15, we’ve all been there. Going to work it off can seem even more daunting alone. The amount of buff guys and Instagram fitspiration girls walking around can seem completely unattainable, but its important to remember they started their workouts the same way you are. The good news is that you don’t have to be alone in your fitness journey, because Pitt has a plethora of options for involvement in fitness organizations.
One of the most general and welcoming (in my so-not-biased opinion since I’m a member) clubs is the Barbell Club, formerly known as Pitt Bodybuilding. With meetings once a week and many events throughout the semester, it’s a low commitment, high reward kind of deal. The events will range from club mixers, ice cream socials, and of course a little in-gym show boating for a cause like our amazing Pull-for-Puppies event! We also had a formal last year where the ever-creative officers gave out little medals for superlatives and everyone had a great time. Follow us on Instagram for more information!
Okay so now that my shameless self-plug is over, there are a few other fitness related clubs with more work-out specific goals. Each is just as wonderful as the last, and I’ve seen some of the most beautiful, supportive friendships on campus grow from these clubs.
· First, is the Pitt Powerlifting Team, where strong is definitely the new sexy. This group of bad ass fitness lovers can lift unbelievable amounts of weight no matter their size, and provide ample tools to do so. This team is technically a club sport, so it does require a tryout. With enough hard work though, this club is well worth it.
· The CrossFit club is an organization for all of those in favor of functional fitness. They combine weightlifting and cardiovascular strength in order to accomplish great feats of physical fitness.
· Pitt CHAARG is a group of strong women supporting other strong women. It doesn’t get much better than that. This group leads classes and events of varying types of fitness, but always fun.
All of these simply mean that campus recreation is one of the many reasons why students and their needs come first here on campus. One or many of these clubs can allow you to work out, and feel comfortable in learning all there is to know about fitness. In the end, Pitt provides more than enough options to you as a student in order to be your best self.
